Thomas Canto,

Thomas Canto is a French contemporary artist working between Lyon, Shanghai, and Dubai. His practice explores the relationships between architecture, perceptual systems, and the continuous expansion of urban environments through immersive structures, sculptural interventions, and spatial compositions.

Developed across installations, reflective surfaces, suspended lines, and layered constructions, his work investigates how contemporary environments shape human perception. Drawing from the visual language of cities, industrial infrastructures, and architectural rhythms, Canto creates fragmented spatial systems where reflection, depth, tension, and instability become active elements of the work.

His compositions function as perceptual environments rather than static objects. Mirrors, stainless steel, glass, threads, shadows, and light interact with surrounding architecture and constantly shift according to the viewer’s movement and position in space. Through these evolving structures, the work reveals invisible dynamics embedded within contemporary urban life: acceleration, density, repetition, circulation, and infinite growth.

Oscillating between minimal structure and sensory immersion, Canto’s works explore the tension between control and disorientation, material presence and immaterial perception, physical space and mental projection.

His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Centre Pompidou, Palais de Tokyo, Mohammed VI Museum, J7 Art Museum (Shanghai), ART021, West Bund Art & Design, and Art Basel Miami, and is part of numerous private and institutional collections including the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, K11 Foundation, Fosun Foundation, and the French National Library.

Thomas Canto est un artiste contemporain français travaillant entre Lyon, Shanghai et Dubaï. Sa pratique explore les relations entre architecture, systèmes perceptifs et expansion continue des environnements urbains à travers des structures immersives, des interventions sculpturales et des compositions spatiales.

Développé à travers installations, surfaces réfléchissantes, lignes suspendues et constructions stratifiées, son travail interroge la manière dont les environnements contemporains façonnent la perception humaine. Nourri par les langages visuels des villes, des infrastructures industrielles et des rythmes architecturaux, Thomas Canto crée des systèmes spatiaux fragmentés dans lesquels reflet, profondeur, tension et instabilité deviennent des éléments actifs de l’œuvre.

Ses compositions fonctionnent moins comme des objets statiques que comme des environnements perceptifs. Miroirs, acier inoxydable, verre, fils, ombres et lumière interagissent avec l’architecture environnante et se transforment continuellement selon les déplacements et la position du regardeur dans l’espace. À travers ces structures évolutives, le travail révèle des dynamiques invisibles propres aux paysages urbains contemporains : accélération, densité, répétition, circulation et croissance infinie.

Oscillant entre structure minimale et immersion sensorielle, les œuvres de Thomas Canto explorent la tension entre contrôle et désorientation, présence matérielle et perception immatérielle, espace physique et projection mentale.

Son travail a été présenté internationalement, notamment au Centre Pompidou, au Palais de Tokyo, au Musée Mohammed VI, au J7 Art Museum (Shanghai), ainsi qu’à ART021, West Bund Art & Design ou Art Basel Miami, et figure dans plusieurs collections privées et institutionnelles, dont le New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, la K11 Foundation, la Fosun Foundation et la Bibliothèque nationale de France.
